I chose my most intriguing (and facially diverse) 5 characters from this thumbnail exercise. I made full body and clothes silhouettes, and finalized character designs.
I then made prop sheets for my three most exciting characters:
Alex Barker: An outspoken, snarky pre-teen tomboy on search for her missing best friend, Lucy the Cocker Spaniel, ends up discovering darker secrets about the things that go missing in her ever-shrinking town.
Kate: Kate and her friends, the "loser squad", are sick and tired of the popular girls getting their way all the time. When the squad figures out a fool-proof plan to rig the prom queen election so that Kate wins instead of one of the popular girls, Kate finds herself torn between a revenge she doesn't believe in, and her friends' expectations of her.
Aelius: a Greek word for "sun/sunshine"
Aelius was a god of the sunshine until he was cursed and shackled by his arms and legs to a human form. After 200 years, however, Aelius has discovered that he actually prefers life in this form, and constantly has to come up with excuses to not accept help from fellow gods and well-meaning heroes.
I selected my favorite character of the three, Aelius, I also animated an 8-point turn table:
I wanted to use the effect that Mickey Mouse has, where his ears constantly face the camera in a way that makes his silhouette constantly recognizable. In Aelius's case, I wanted his head to resemble a star in every direction, including his side profile (the nose and chin also act as points!) This nods to his godly origins, as the sun is a star, and shows his arrogant belief that he is the 'star' or 'main character' of the world.
